Pinoy Male adolescence in the 90s

Late 80s

I remember growing up watching Lunch Date of GMA-7. I remember every able bodied guy copying the fashion statement of one actor/singer - Randy Santiago. Shades, Levi’s Jeans, and of course the Long Hair.

So, trying to emulate this IDOL, everyone was growing his hair. Even if it shouldn’t be grown long like mine. LOL. I had this thick wavy hair which when it grew to some 4-5 inches, I had to run to a gay parlor and have it straightened. I still have pictures of myself sporting that hair style. oh yes Im so embarrassed by it.

THEN CAME THE NEXT IDOL.

Early 90s

He brought in with him the idea that masculine is the in thing. And along with that the bald look.

Who would forget the BENCH commercial where Richard Gomez (aka Goma) rowed his way to Male Idol Supreme? And he sported the Bald/Crew Cut look in a time when everybody was singing (anong pake mo sa long hair ko?) Being bald was never a fashion statement for us guys. But when Goma sported it, yes you are right, the next day, everyone fell in line for the barber shops and got themselves a bald head (or leave some hair about 1 inch).
